Livio Luzi, M.D., is Professor of Physiology at the University of Milan and San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Italy where he is Head of the Amino Acid and Stable Isotopes Laboratory and Director of the Nutrition and Metabolism Program.
Dr. Luzi is also Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the University of Miami and a Visiting Scientist at the Diabetes Research Institute.
After receiving his medical degrees from the University of Milan, Dr. Luzi completed research fellowships in Endocrinology at Yale University and in Diabetes/Metabolism at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
From 1993-1996 he was on the faculty of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School as an Assistant Professor, before returning to Italy.
Dr. Luzi’s work focuses on the assessment of metabolic effects of islet transplantation therapy as well as the complications associated with immunosuppression. He has developed a multi-level approach to assess pre- and post-transplant metabolism. By combining blood chemistry, nutritional assessment, and NMR Spectroscopy, which measures the specific concentrations of metabolites and enzyme activities, Dr. Luzi’s research will provide a more complete picture of islet transplantation.
