Shari Messinger Cayetano ME, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Director of the Biostatistics Core at the Diabetes Research Institute.
Dr. Messinger received her Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 2002. Since joining the faculty at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2002, Dr. Messinger has collaborated extensively with research investigations within the Diabetes Research Institute and Drug Abuse and Aids Research Center.
Additionally, Dr. Messinger serves as the Director of Biostatistics for the General Clinical Research Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Her specific DRI collaborations have focused into two broadly defined areas of islet transplantation research. The first is in determining factors that are associated with improved islet viability and yield, considering factors that are donor specific, as well as related to the isolation process itself. Statistical analyses have involved crafting models useful in determining the prognostic value of these factors in achieving successful preparations. The second main area is in evaluating techniques used for the islet transplant procedure, and the post-transplant evaluation of islet recipients. This work evaluates metabolic data from transplant recipients to assess graft function, developing models that are predictive of graft failure as well as strategies to improve graft survival. In addition, she collaborates in research to study quality of life and nutritional information of post transplant recipients.
