International TrainingHIITT Workshop

Investigators from around the world participate in the 6th HIITT Workshop, held this year in Snowbird, Utah.

Widespread use of islet transplantation has presented many challenges. Among them: a long learning curve for the technical team involved in processing organs.

Cellular processing requires a multidisciplinary team of experts and precise monitoring throughout the entire transplant process.

There are, however, a greater number of scientists interested in working in the field and setting up islet isolation facilities.

To help train colleagues and share critical techniques for success, the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), together with the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada, host a series of workshops in Human Islet Isolation and Transplantation Techniques (HIITT).

The three days of training covers:

  • Human pancreatic islet isolation
  • Purification and culture techniques
  • Manufacturing and production
  • FDA regulations
  • cGMP/cGTP (Current Good Manufacturing Process/Current Good Tissue Practice) requirements
  • Clinical transplantation protocols.
