Diabetes Research Institute Presents DRI BioHub at Children with Diabetes Friends for Life Conference

Families can design their own DRI BioHub replica and learn from the researchers about this promising project

At this year's Friends for Life Conference in Orlando, DRI scientists involved with developing the DRI BioHub will present their research on this bio-engineered mini organ that mimics the native pancreas. Dr. Cherie Stabler will talk about her work on engineering an ideal environment for housing and protecting insulin-producing cells. Dr. Chris Fraker, who has type 1 diabetes, will speak about developing several islet encapsulation strategies to help the cells survive and thrive long term.

Dr. Cherie Stabler: The DRI BioHub: Mimicking the Native Pancreas - Thursday, July 11, 10:45 a.m. - 12 noon, Coronado J

Dr. Chris Fraker: The DRI BioHub: Optimizing Islet Encapsulation - Friday, July 12, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., Coronado H

Both Drs. Stabler and Fraker will be available at the DRI Foundation booth, #311, in the exhibit hall on Thursday and Friday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. to answer questions. Those who stop by for a chat will even be able to touch and feel a real scaffold platform! Meanwhile kids can get a hands-on experience by crafting their own BioHub replica while getting a better understanding of this cutting-edge concept and the essential components of this mini-organ.

Presented by the Children with Diabetes organization, Friends for Life is a conference that has grown to attract several thousand families affected by diabetes who travel to Orlando, FL, from as far away as Japan, Indonesia, Denmark, Colombia, and the UK. To be held this year July 9-14 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, this integral gathering of the diabetes community will provide attendees with the most current information on diabetes management and research. Ever since the inaugural event 14 years ago, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation has been a participant, sharing the DRI’s progress toward a cure while making “friends for life!”

Information on the conference is available here. And whether you’re heading to Orlando or not, you can brush up on your DRI BioHub knowledge with this video - and watch DRI tv for the latest news on the scaffold.
