DON'T MISS THE LABOR OF LOVE GOLF TOURNAMENT!!!
Through a special program called the Blueprint for Cure, America's union workers have joined together with the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation in a unique effort to find a cure for diabetes.
The relationship began in 1984, and reached a major milestone when the men and women of the unions funded – and built -- the Diabetes Research Institute facility in Miami, the most comprehensive diabetes research facility in the world. The building opened in 1994.
The Blueprint for Cure is spearheaded by the Building and Construction Trades Department and endorsed by the AFL-CIO. In recognition of the union's unparalleled support, a permanent plaque erected at the DRI's entrance bears the following statement:
“Built by the hearts and hands of America's workers, whose generosity and craftsmanship knows no bounds.”
The unions sponsor two annual events that serve as the centerpiece of the Blueprint for Cure.
Dollars Against Diabetes (DAD's Day)
Each year since 1986, more than 30,000 members of the building and construction trades, as well and their families and friends, have collected donations for Dollars Against Diabetes, or DAD's Day.
These dedicated volunteers gather on street corners, at subway stations, in malls and other public locations in hundreds of cities in all 50 states, to help in the fight to cure diabetes.
Thus far, DAD's Day has raised more than $17 million for the Diabetes Research Institute. Officially recognized the day before Fathers' Day, DAD's Day is the largest single-day fundraising campaign for diabetes research.
In 1989, President George H.W. Bush recognized the program as one of the top private sector initiatives in the United States.
If you would like more information on DAD’s Day, or are interested in participating in any of the events, visit the DAD’s Day web site.
The Labor of Love
The annual Labor of Love Tournament has been an integral part of the Blueprint for Cure.
Also sponsored by the Building and Construction Trades Department, the Labor of Love gives some of the most active supporters of diabetes research – including labor, business and government leaders – an opportunity to enjoy friendly competition and maintain their commitment to DRI through golf and gin rummy fundraising tournaments.
