DRI GOLF AND TENNIS CLASSIC

January 28, 2008

For the event chairfamily, (l-r) Javier,
Andrew, Andria, Nicole (and Matthew,
who isn't pictured) Holtz, the DRI
Golf and Tennis Classic is a labor of
love.  Andrew has type 1 diabetes.

The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) Golf and Tennis Classic boasted outstanding weather and equally sunny, hopeful spirits at Miami Beach’s esteemed La Gorce Country Club on Monday, January 28.  More than 300 friends of Javier, Andria, Matthew, Nicole and Andrew Holtz turned out to show their support and encouragement for the chair-family’s ongoing efforts to help the DRI find a cure for their youngest member, Andrew.  Ever since he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes seven years ago at age 7, it has become the personal mission of everyone in the Holtz household to do anything possible to eliminate the disease.  In accordance with their great efforts, each event, including this one, has raised more than $350,000.

“This is our family’s fourth year to chair this event,” proclaimed Andria Holtz at the dinner program, which followed a beautiful day of golf and tennis play.  “And with your help, we have already raised more than $1.5 million for the Diabetes Research Institute!”

This classic is a multi-generational labor of love for the Holtz family that begins with the support of Fana and Abel Holtz (Javier’s parents) and Diane and Aristotle Ares (Andria’s parents) and reaches down to their granddaughter, Nicole Holtz.  The 16-year-old, who is proudly following in her parents’ and grandparents’ philanthropic footsteps, headed up the tennis tournament and ran the carnival court activities, competitive games which occurred on the courts after the matches.  She also recruited five classmates from Miami Country Day School to join her in selling spaces on a money board, which raised $5,000.

Other top sponsors and supportive guests included: Marco Selva and Elda Brouwer of the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Wayne and Arlene Chaplin, Dr. Paul and Karen Chaplin, and Fred and Terry Jove of Southern Wine & Spirits, Rocky and Susie Stein of Stanford Group Company, Mark and Honey Revitz, Irene and Irv Barr, Hope and Gary Lesnik, Maria and Sheldon Lowe, Calvin and Flavia Oak Foundation, Inserra Shop Rite Supermarkets, Bob and Sookey Schwartz and Fred Berens of Wachovia Securities, Steve Sager of Sager Development/Subway, Juli Brodsky of ME Miami Fitness, Perry Ellis International, Amarilis and Claudio Osorio, Debbie and Scott Robins, Adrian Ares, Robert Sherman, Lady Monica Heftler, Joey Krutel, and sports celebrities Robert Smith and Brian Jordan.

Over the years, the event’s extensive silent auction has accrued an impressive reputation, even with the men, who tend to congregate in the sports and music memorabilia room, while the women swarm through the club hallway, pouring over trendy designer handbags, shimmering jewelry, house ware and more.  Bid cards filled up quickly again this year, especially for gift certificates for popular hotels, restaurants, stores, cosmetic procedures, and more.  Priceless prizes, such as package trips to New York for the US Open, plus a meet and greet with Alex Rodriguez, courtesy of the A-Rod Family Foundation, and to Los Angeles for a meet and greet with the cast of “Entourage,” spurred bidding wars during the live auction.
