CRYSTAL BALL
May 5, 2007

At the extraordinary Crystal Ball, which benefited the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), more than 300 guests enjoyed champagne, cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres at a lovely cocktail reception, followed by a sumptuous dinner and dancing at The Garden City Hotel. According to Gala Chairpersons Joan and William Fishlinger and Honorary Chairperson Louise Pashcow, the May 5th event raised nearly $500,000 for the cure-focused work of the DRI.
The Honorable Michael A. L. Balboni, Deputy Secretary for Public Safety for the State of New York, was the evening’s honoree. One of New York’s most respected political leaders, Balboni has been lending his support to the DRI and attending this black-tie affair for many years. Also recognized that evening was Barbara Hatz, former Chairman of the DRI Foundation Long Island region, who was presented with the 2007 Gillin Family Humanitarian Award.
During the program, the DRI’s Jay Skyler, M.D. spoke about the progress the DRI has made this year, and Norma S. Kenyon, Ph.D. sent greetings from the DRI via video. Dr. Kenyon is a former recipient of the Crystal Ball Scientific Achievement Award and a dear friend of many Long Islanders in the audience. Their words spurred generous contributions during the Fund-A-Grant portion of the live auction, including a $50,000 matching grant from The Future Leadership Foundation. Special thanks were also extended to Roberta and Bruce Waller of the Rowland & Sylvia Schaefer Charitable Foundation for serving as this year’s Crystal Ball Sponsor. Other sponsors included The Pashcow Family Foundation; The Hatz Family; Mr. and Mrs. William Fishlinger; Mr. Martin Granowitz; CFO; Ahmuty, Demers & McManus and Wright Risk Management Company, Inc.
The hardworking committee is already busy planning next year’s Crystal Ball, which will be held on May 3, 2008 at The Garden City Hotel. Those interested in getting involved should contact the Long Island regional office of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation at 516.822.1700 or liregion@drif.org.
