D.R.E.A.M.S IN THE CITY
May 16, 2008
The Northeast region of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation proudly held its third annual D.R.E.a.M.S. in the City fundraiser on May 14th at Cipriani 23rd Street in New York City. The glamorous and sophisticated event exceeded all expectations. Nearly 600 people attended and close to $1 million was raised for the cure-focused work of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI.). Attendees of note included Michael Strahan and Lawrence Tynes of the Super Bowl-winning New York Giants. The event was co-chaired by Samantha Shanken Baker, Bonnie Inserra and Risa Pulver, and Honorary Chair was Natasha Silver. The evening honored Thomas P. Silver of Orda Management Corporation. Tom was presented with the Dare to Dream award by his good friend Michael Strahan.
The unforgettable soirée featured an Art Deco theme and decor, classic cocktails and specialty drinks, fabulous cuisine paired with excellent, highly-rated wines, courtesy of Wine Spectator, and luxury silent and live auctions. Sotheby’s Senior Vice President and wine auctioneer Jamie Ritchie led an exciting bidding war for one-of-a-kind items, such as the opportunity to help the luxury publication, Robb Report, select “Car of the Year”; dinner for 20 at New York’s Primehouse restaurant, and a daylong yacht cruise, courtesy of longtime supporters of the DRI, the Inserra family. However, it was Michael Strahan who captured the limelight when he took to the podium to auction off himself for an afternoon of golf and an autographed pair of shoes. In addition, a special funding opportunity known as “The Miracle of Stem Cells,” brought in a number of generous donations for the DRI’s Pancreatic Stem Cell Development program.
Special thanks were extended to top sponsors The Inserra Family, Ellen and Morton Silver, Natasha and Thomas P. Silver, CBRE/CB Richard Ellis, Esther and Marc Goodman, Stacy Joy Goodman Memorial Foundation & The Kenmar Group, Deana and Stephen P. Hanson, Jane Parker, Lisa and John Reisman, and Jill and Cliff Viner. The DRI Foundation is grateful to all of our generous sponsors, in-kind-donors, honorary committees, event committee, and volunteers. We could not have produced such a successful event without you!
