DREaMS IN THE CITY
May 17, 2007
On May 17th the second annual D.R.E.a.M.S. in the City event, which was sponsored by Wine Spectator and held at the West Side Loft, attracted approximately 400 of New York’s trendsetters and hip professionals – that’s double the attendance of the inaugural event. Combining diabetes research, elegance and modern sophistication (D.R.E.a.M.S.), the evening captured the true essence of New York culture and lifestyle in a chic setting. Benefiting the Diabetes Research Institute, a world leader in cure-focused research, the event raised more than $700,000 – nearly three times the funds raised at the premier event.
Among the luminaries in the crowd were Honorees Bonnie Inserra and Larry Inserra, Jr. of Inserra Supermarkets, Event Co-chairs Tammy Cohen, Kim Dickstein, Risa Pulver and Samantha Shanken Baker, and Honorary Committee member Sam Talbot of Bravo’s “Top Chef,” among others.
The soiree featured cool cocktails, fabulous cuisine, perfectly paired wine and cheese combinations, eclectic music and an exclusive silent auction covering everything from 40” flat panel televisions and glamorous getaways to luxurious spa treatments, pet portraits and designer goods. Additionally, guests had the opportunity to purchase much-needed laboratory equipment and supplies for the scientists at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). One generous donor hoping to help the dream of a cure come true purchased more than $150,000 of this critical equipment.
During the program, DRI Scientific Director Camillo Ricordi, M.D. presented the first-ever “Dare to Dream” award to Lindsey Inserra, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 11. She accepted the award on behalf of her family and parents, the event’s honorees. Her poignant speech left many members of the audience in tears yet hopeful that the Diabetes Research Institute would find a cure for this insidious disease.
In addition to Wine Spectator, top sponsors included The Inserra Family; Stacy Joy Goodman Memorial Foundation; The Kenmar Group; LandAmerica; Lodi Markets LLC & The Marino Family & The Kanter Family; Lisa and John Reisman; Bear Stearns and Andre Dore; Cadbury Schweppes/Canada Dry Bottling of NY; Kim and Jordan Dickstein; The Durst Organization; Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP; Jane Parker and Francis Cosentino; Risa and Jeffrey Pulver; Judi and Paul Reisman; The Shanken Family Foundation; Holly and David Sherr; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP; and UBS.
