COOKING FOR A CURE

March 5, 2007

State Senator Carl Marcellino, Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi, Judge Richard McCord and Honoree Dr. Yelena Nicholson, a pediatric endocrinologist at Winthrop University Hospital, topped a list of "Who’s Who" guests at a unique event, which raised $43,000 for the DRI.  It was the 4th annual Cooking for a Cure dinner at Page One Restaurant in Glen Cove.

A capacity crowd enjoyed tantalizing dishes ranging from coconut crusted shrimp to delicious bread pudding created by co-owner Chef Jeanine DiMenna.  Hosted by the DRIF, the event was sponsored in part by Page One Restaurant in an effort to raise money and public awareness to find a cure for diabetes.

Senator Marcellino added to the excitement by securing a $25,000 grant.  Co-chairs Delia Whitton and Mary Hall thanked the Senator and all of the generous attendees.

"Seeing people who have actually received islet transplants gives us great hope for the day that those still living with diabetes will have their own reversed," said Whitton, whose daughter, Amanda, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 3.
