ResearchIslet Transplantation

Islet transplantation is a procedure that replaces only the cells required to normalize blood sugars -- cells that have already been lost because of diabetes.

Instead of major surgery, the procedure is performed in a radiology suite, and takes less than an hour.

In the late 1980’s, a pivotal advance was made when Dr. Camillo Ricordi developed the automated method for isolating these fragile cell clusters from a donor pancreas. This system dramatically increased the number of cells that could be obtained from one organ, and resulted in a surge in the number of islet transplants performed worldwide.
