Researchers have shown that islet cell transplantation can normalize blood sugar levels and prevent hypoglycemia in
individuals with type 1 diabetes.

But there is still much work to be done to achieve long-term islet function and to make this procedure safe, effective and available for every child and adult who can benefit from it.  

Much of the research now underway is aimed at overcoming the remaining challenges:  

• Eliminating anti-rejection drugs:  Finding alternatives to the powerful anti-rejection drugs currently needed for organ/tissue transplant.  

• Increasing cell supply: developing a reliable and plentiful source of insulin-producing cells to treat the millions with diabetes.

• Preventing recurrence of autoimmunity: Stopping the autoimmune process that caused diabetes in the first place.
