Under the Microscope with… Norma Sue Kenyon, Ph.D. |
|
Dr. Kenyon discusses how Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs), which are found naturally in our body's own bone marrow, have a beneficial effect on transplanted islets. MSCs have the unique ability to reduce inflammation, repair damaged tissue and stimulate the growth of blood vessels.
They may also play a role in the survival and function of insulin-producing cells. For all these reasons, it's believed MSCs can enhance the use of cell-based therapies for the treatment of diabetes. |

| New Study: Combining Tools Improves Glucose Control |

New findings from a one-year, multi-center study, including the Diabetes Research Institute, show that type 1 diabetes patients achieve better glucose control using an insulin pump in combination with a continuous glucose sensor that monitors their skin glucose levels, rather than intensive multi-injection therapy with traditional glucose monitoring.
The results of the study were published in The New England Journal of Medicine. |
