Hi All!
On Tuesday, our scientific director, Dr. Camillo Ricordi, joined Dr. Michael Shapiro and colleagues at Hackensack University Medical Center (New Jersey) to announce a new, translational research partnership. This collaboration is an outgrowth of the Diabetes Research Institute Federation and its goal is to accelerate cure-focused research.
The DRI in Miami is pursuing several approaches to improve islet replacement and restore natural insulin production. While these methods are in development and in various stages of testing in pre-clinical models - moving from the lab toward the patient - the group at Hackensack will be gearing up for a first round of clinical trials targeted for 2012. These will include the use of a “bio-hybrid” device to house and protect the insulin-producing cells that was developed by our DRI scientists. Here is a link to a report on Tuesday’s meeting.
