Happy DRI Thursday, Friends! With so many parents' attention turned to back to school issues right now, we thought we would take a hiatus from research news this week and provide some useful info on this topic.
Many parents with a child with diabetes worry about their children in school – about not being with them all day and who will care for him/her in their absence. But some of that anxiety can be relieved by being prepared. There are volumes of resources available to help. The DRI Foundation has created a short and concise brochure that can be personalized to each child and kept on file for the easy access of individuals who comes in contact with your child. A Guide for School Personnel and Child Care Providers contains need-to-know information on how to deal with insulin reactions, and much more. You can view, download and print copies by copying this url into your browser: http://media.diabetesresearch.org/GetInvolved/Other/SchoolBrochureFINAL.pdf
Or you can order your free brochures by emailing us at info@drif.org or calling 800-321-3437.
Additionally, Kellie Rodriguez, MSN, CDE, CPT, director of patient education at the DRI, offers her need-to-know Top Tips for Safety at School here: www.DiabetesResearch.org/SafetyatSchool.
Another important resource for many parents combatting the day-to-day challenges of life with diabetes in the family has become the DRI Foundation’s PEP (Parents Empowering Parents) Squad. As one member said, “These people understand; they speak the same language. “ On the PEP Squad’s Facebook group wall, there are constant discussions underway. You can follow along or participate by joining this group at http://tinyurl.com/PEPsquad.
You can also sign up to be a DRInsider in order to receive our PEP Talk e-newsletter, which covers family issues, daily challenges of diabetes, tips, opportunities to connect and more. It’s quick and easy to register here: https://www.diabetesresearch.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=498&tab=1
The DRI offers more advice in this brochure, called Diabetes at School: http://www.diabetesresearch.org/page.aspx?pid=605
And a sample Section 504 Plan can be downloaded here:
