Hello everyone and happy Thursday! As you know, the Diabetes Research Institute is solely focused on finding a cure for diabetes. In order to fulfill this mission, we have assembled some of the finest minds working in diabetes research to focus their efforts on this one goal. In addition to our multidisciplinary team of scientists working at the DRI and our collaborators in other leading centers worldwide, the Institute also has a Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) comprised of several distinguished scientists who have earned international recognition for their contributions to diabetes research and immunology.
This week, we are pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Megan Sykes, a world renowned immunologist and diabetes researcher at Columbia University Medical Center. She previously spent nearly 20 years at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School where her work focused on the use of blood-derived cells to establish immune tolerance, which has great implications for transplantation and autoimmune diseases like diabetes. Another major area of her current research focuses on utilization of bone marrow transplantation for the induction of transplantation tolerance, both to organs from the same species (allografts) and from other species (xenografts). Dr. Sykes’ laboratory studies in this area have resulted in the first successful trials of intentional allograft tolerance induction in humans.
Dr. Sykes joins the other distinguished members of the SAB, which serves as an external consultant to the DRI, evaluating research programs and progress, as well as providing guidance and assistance in administrative policies and issues. The members of the SAB are appointed by the Dean of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the University’s Vice President and Provost.
The members of the DRI’s Scientific Advisory Board are:
>Dr. Charles Brunicardi, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
>Dr. Christopher Newgard, Duke University School of Medicine
>Dr. James Shapiro, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada
>Dr. Megan Sykes, Columbia University Medical Center
>Dr. Massimo Trucco, University of Pittsburgh/Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
>Dr. Kathryn Wood, University of Oxford, England
