Per-Olof Berggren, Ph.D.

Per-Olof Berggren, Ph.D., is Head of Cell Biology and Signal Tranduction and the Mary Lou Held Visiting Scientist at the Diabetes Research Institute, and Adjunct Professor of Surgery at University of Miami. He is also Professor and Head, Experimental Endocrinology at the Karolinksa Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Berggren's work focuses on the detailed study and evaluation of beta cell function at various stages before and following islet transplantation.

Through cell imaging techniques, his work aims to develop methods to prevent and reduce islet loss during the islet transplant process.

He has joined the DRI to head up its new cellular biology lab, one of several new leadership initiatives underway at the Institute.
