Piero Gandini, from Bovezzo, Italy, is the president of Flos Lighting, an international lighting company that operates subsidiaries in France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Norway, Belgium, China, and on Long Island in the USA.
A husband and father of three, Gandini was inspired to become active in diabetes causes when one of his daughters was diagnosed with the disease. In 2001, he founded Associazione Sostegno 70, a non-profit organization established by a group of parents of children with diabetes that assists children, teens, and families after the onset of the illness. The organization aims to improve the quality of life for children and teens with diabetes through education, increased awareness, and the support of research.
Gandini and his wife, Paola, have become generous supporters of the DRI, traveling from their home in Italy to attend fundraisers here in the United States and designating financial gifts towards the furthering of research on tolerance induction. They are Governors' Society members of the Foundation, and Gandini was elected to the national board of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) in 2004.
