Sonja Zuckerman is the Life Chairman of the Love and Hope committee for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF). Serving at the helm of this unparalleled fundraising effort since its inception more than 30 years ago, she has helped to raise millions of dollars for the DRI.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, Mrs. Zuckerman moved to Israel early on and was educated in French schools. By the time she came to the United States, more than 50 years ago, she had mastered seven languages. Mrs. Zuckerman became an active participant in important causes in New York, Chicago, and Detroit, where she became the impetus that launched the long-standing Angel Ball, benefiting the National Council for Jewish Women.
In addition to serving on the national board, Mrs. Zuckerman is a Distinguished Humanitarian of the organization, and in recognition of her support, the Institute’s sixth floor conference room bears the name of Mrs. Zuckerman and her late husband, Mr. Harry Zuckerman.
A mainstay in South Florida, Mrs. Zuckerman has served on the boards of the University of Miami/Lowe Art Museum and Children’s Resource Fund, and as an Ambassador for Project: New Born. She is a strong supporter of the National Parkinson’s Foundation, the Limb Bank, Metro Zoo, Miami City Ballet, Vizcaya and the Alzheimer’s Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and is actively involved in the Salon Group and the Greater Miami Opera.
