2009 Press Release

DRI Foundation Earns Top Rating from Charity Navigator For Third Straight Year

Hollywood, FL (May 19, 2009) -- For the third consecutive year, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) has earned the highest rating available from the nation's largest independent evaluator of charities.

Charity Navigator has awarded its coveted four-star rating to the diabetes foundation for "sound fiscal management" and "its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances," according to an announcement from the respected oversight organization.

Only 11 percent of the charities evaluated have received three back-to-back four-star ratings, "indicating that the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America," the announcement said.

"This 'exceptional' designation from Charity Navigator differentiates this diabetes foundation from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust."

Charity Navigator works to help charitable givers make intelligent decisions by evaluating charities' financial health and efficiency. It calculates each charity’s score based upon several broad criteria, including how much is spent per dollar raised, what percentage of funds goes to programs vs. administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the organization's long-term financial health. It then assigns a rating from one to four, with four being the best rating.

The mission of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation is to provide the Diabetes Research Institute with the funding necessary to cure diabetes now. The Diabetes Research Institute, a center of excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is a recognized world leader in cure-focused research. Since its inception in the early 1970s, the DRI has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes research, pioneering many of the techniques used in islet transplantation. The DRI is now building upon these achievements by bridging cell-based therapies with emerging technologies to restore insulin production. For the millions of families already affected by diabetes, the Diabetes Research Institute is the best hope for a cure
