Advancing Progress Toward a Cure for Diabetes
There’s a sense of urgency at the Diabetes Research Institute. Worldwide, more than 170 million people are afflicted with diabetes, and the World Health Organization estimates that by 2030 that number will more than double. The challenge before us is great. Our resolve to find a cure for diabetes is greater.
The Dr. Denise R. and Thomas D. Stern Fast Track Center for Testing embodies our commitment to cure diabetes. Here, researchers conduct fast track testing; evaluating promising new technologies and potential therapies in a state-of-the-art environment. And because we manage all three phases of research under one roof, we have the ability to advance research exponentially faster than what might be found in a traditional research environment.
Diabetes research scientists from other centers are invited to test their findings here, as well. By encouraging collaboration among researchers, we hope to accelerate progress toward a diabetes cure.
Under our fast track approach, many of the projects focus on improving current islet processing and transplantation methods, as well as developing and testing emerging technologies from a variety of new scientific disciplines.
The rapidly growing fields of tissue engineering, stem cell development and protein therapy are just a few of these new areas contributing to many of the recent advances in diabetes research.
