Lester's Back-to-School Event

September 18, 2008

Parents, children and savvy shoppers enjoyed an evening of fashion and fun at Lester’s, a family-owned and operated children’s clothing store on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Seventy kids with parents in tow gathered to celebrate Lester’s 60th birthday with a back-to-school event that benefited the cure-focused work of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI).

“What was nice was that Lester’s approached us! They said they wanted to do an event for children while raising money for a good cause. I think that says a lot about their organization, as well as ours,” said Dr. Denise Stern, who spearheaded the event. “Lester’s is a multi-generational family-run business, and as such, the store and staff are very warm and accommodating.”

Led by Marilyn Ostrow and Ed Sussman of Lester’s, the staff welcomed families to this first-time event. Shoppers scooped up ultra-hip fashions for babies through teens, as they enjoyed delicious, healthy snacks and were entertained by world-renowned magician Elliot Zimet. Lester’s donated multiple gift certificates, which were raffled off that evening, the proceeds of which went to the DRI. Together with a generous donation from Lester’s, the DRI raised more than $4,000!

“Families came out to support the Diabetes Research Institute and their work to find a cure for diabetes,” said Stern, whose daughter, Samantha, now 11, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 22 months old. The Stern family is committed to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, and Denise’s husband, Thomas D. Stern, serves as the organization’s National Board chairman.

Lester’s is also a supporter of the DRI Foundation’s Carnival for a Cure, a fun, family-oriented event held each spring. With the success of the store’s back-to-school benefit, a similar event is being planned for 2009, just before the start of summer camp season.
