Della Matheson serves as Trial Coordinator for the University of Miami Clinical Center for the Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Study. “Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet” is a consortium of researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health investigating interventions for the prevention or delay of type 1 diabetes.  She has been involved in research aimed at prevention of Type 1 Diabetes for the last 23 years.  She currently serves as the Director of Education at the Diabetes Research Institute and, as she did previously for 4 years, from 1988 to 1992.

Ms. Matheson is a graduate of Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, LA, receiving her Diploma in Nursing in 1973.  She has been a Certified Diabetes Educator for the more than 30 years. She has been a member of the Education Advisory Board for Dexcom, Inc. In addition to the many articles published as part the DPT-1 Study Group and Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Study Group, she has co-authored articles in Diabetes Care, Acta Diabetologia, The Diabetes Educator, Pediatric Diabetes, Clinical Diabetes, and Focus on Diabetes.  Topics of these articles include: insulin secretion patterns during the period preceding diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children at risk for its development, insulin pump therapy, diabetes and pregnancy, diabetes and the preschool age child, and hypoglycemia.
