Empire Ride for the DRI 2017

Empire Ride for the DRI Pedals Past Goal

A love for riding and a grass-roots effort led cycling enthusiasts to surpass their goal to help find a cure for diabetes recently during the Empire Ride for the DRI, which is a subset of cyclists who participated in the Massapequa Park Bicycle Club Tour of the Hamptons. More than $50,000 was raised in support of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) and its mission to find a biological cure for diabetes.

Donning DRI bike jerseys, 108team members took to the roadways on the beautiful Sunday of Sept. 24 from Southampton and traveled through the breath-taking scenic south fork of Long Island featuring farmlands, beaches, mansions and historic towns such as East Hampton, Amagansett and Montauk.

Reuniting their efforts for a second year are Event Chair Keith Adwar; David Newman, longtime cycling partner with Adwar; and Bruce A. Siegel, member of the Executive Committee and Secretary of the DRI Foundation’s National Board of Directors, who have all been affected by diabetes, and wanted to take their passion for cycling to raise both awareness and funds for the DRI’s singular goal of finding a cure diabetes.

“This was truly a grass roots effort by all to make this year such a great success,” Adwar said. “I’m so proud to be associated with the great works of the Diabetes Research Institute and hopefully the cycling we do will help fund the research to help us all.”

Adwar, Newman and Siegel promoted the event to friends, family and work colleagues to join them for Empire Ride for the DRI and built a solid team of more than 100 riders, tripling the amount from last year, as well as more than doubling the amount of funds raised.

All of us at the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation are so excited with the success of our second Ride for the DRI,” said Siegel, who also serves as the Northeast Region Board Chairman. We had more than 100 bikers who turned out to support the DRI and we exceeded our goal and raised over $50,000 to support research to cure type 1 diabetes.”

Riders signed up through the fundraising webpage at in order to raise support and sponsors from their personal networks.

Newman was proud of this year’s vibe and outcome.

“It was a wonderful day with friends riding through a beautiful part of the world, and best of all, we were raising money to benefit so many,” Newman said.
