DIABETES RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOUNDATION’S 16th
ANNUAL FALL INTO FASHION EVENT BRINGS FAMILIES AND FRIENDS TOGETHER TO FIND A CURE

St. John Fashion’s and Woodbury
Real Estate power-couple bring hundreds together for a special cause

With a near record setting audience of 325 guests in attendance, the 16th Annual Fall Into Fashion Luncheon & Fashion Show benefiting the Diabetes Research Institute raised an estimated $234,000. The funds raised at the annual event focus solely on finding a cure for type 1 diabetes at the DRI.  The luncheon has become one of Long Island’s most anticipated social events. Once again, the stellar event was held at the beautiful Garden City Hotel on Thursday, November 6th. Fashion leader St. John of Americana Manhasset, recognized the world over for its classic, timeless style, unveiled its 2015 Resort Collection in a runway show that dazzled the audience.

In a moving moment, the event opened with the song “Let It Go” and was followed by Northeast Region Executive Committee member Barbara Hatz who told the assemblage, “Those living with diabetes have many fears and obstacles to overcome everyday. We will not let go of finding a cure at the DRI. Here I stand and here I will stay until we complete our mission and let diabetes go forever.”

The event honored an exceptional and well-known Long Island couple, Betsy and Shawn Elliott of Woodbury, of Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates, the top independent real-estate brokerage on Long Island. Shawn is a graduate of The University of Miami, the home of the DRI, and was immediately drawn to the event, telling the audience, “It is our privilege and honor to serve as honorees for this year’s Diabetes Research Institute Foundation’s Fall Into Fashion Luncheon. We knew little about diabetes and the severity of it until we went to visit the DRI and began this journey to raise money to find a cure. Since we we have been involved, we’ve discovered many of our closest and dear friends have been struggling for years with diabetes. Witnessing firsthand the hard work and devotion of the scientists at the DRI we know a cure for diabetes will certainly become a reality.”

Bruce Siegel, Co-Chair Northeast Region Board of Directors spoke eloquently about the honorees and the DRI’s work. He also recognized the dedication and involvement of long-time DRI supporters and event co-chairs Fran Helfant, Korey Liebman and Eileen Zinn and Journal Chair Roberta Helfant. A special recognition was given to Underwriting Sponsor Roberta and Bruce Waller & Family.

Roberta Waller had this to say about the event and its supporters, “We believe the DRI’s mission, goals and collaboration with other research scientists around the world will result in a cure for this dreadful disease. So we continue to pledge our support and thank all of our family and friends that stand along side of us
with theirs.”

The afternoon had many highlights beginning with the exceptional food consisting of passed hors d’oeuvres and a tastefully prepared lunch to a plethora of unique items including designer handbags, jewelry, spa-day gift certificates and a grand prize of a $2,500 St. John at the Americana Manhasset shopping spree. Honoree Shawn Elliott made the afternoon even more special with a live auction—tickets to see Neil Diamond at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn and a private dinner for 12 prepared by Larry Scott Caterers.
