Cure Research: First BioHub Trial Patient is Insulin Free

In August, the DRI announced that the first patient in its clinical trial to test for the first time a novel transplant technique for insulin-producing cells was successfully completed. Just three weeks later, the DRI made headlines when it was revealed that the patient, Wendy Peacock of San Antonio, TX, was insulin free after 26 years of living with type 1 diabetes. Read more

Under the Microscope: Dora Berman-Weinberg, Ph.D.

Among the major challenges in the development of the DRI BioHub is the ability to sustain the survival of the transplanted islets without the need for harsh anti-rejection drugs. Dr. Dora Berman-Weinberg is largely involved in testing new strategies to make the immune system tolerant of these cells. She also helped to develop the biodegradeable scaffold, one of the BioHub platforms being tested in the new pilot trial. Read the Q&A
