So, you’re heading off to college – with your diabetes. No problem!! This “College Prep” program can help you (ages 17 to 21) prepare to leave the “nest” for the first time.
We know it’s challenging for young adults to mature and move from childhood to adulthood. You’ve got freedom (Wow!!) and responsibilities (Uggh!!) that accompany this stage of life – and it can often be challenging and frustrating (Yikes!!). But in the end, it should – and will – be gratifying!
When you have type 1 diabetes, this transition can be far more difficult, frightening, and intense for both you and your parents. But, the DRI’s education team can prepare and educate you to be successful. We want to help you “hone” your diabetes self-management skills to make you more independent, sophisticated, and mindful and put you at the helm of your care (Yippee!!). Preventing diabetic ketoacidosis and severe hypoglycemia, while you are navigating through an entirely new environment and new way of living, is extremely important.
Until now, your diabetes management has been shared with your parents, but now you will need to become more secure in your own judgements, including knowing when to ask your parents, friends, & healthcare professionals for assistance.
Learn how to “think like a pancreas” by going “beyond the rules” so that eating college dorm meals, navigating parties, and juggling ever-changing school and work schedules won’t upset the balance with your diabetes.
