Alberto Pugliese, M.D.

DRI researchers are focused on moving promising research into the clinical trial phase of testing and with that comes an increasing need for clinical research expertise. Dr. David Baidal, who served in the DRI's Clinical Islet Transplant Program as a post-doctoral fellow, re-joined the team at precisely the right moment. Read more about him as we go Under the Microscope with David Baidal, M.D.

Researchers Standardize Pancreatic Islet Production
Alberto Pugliese, M.D.

The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), in a collaborative study with seven other international centers, has demonstrated the feasibility of large-scale producation of pancreatic islets using a standardized process. DRI Director Camillo Ricordi, M.D., was the first author of the report, which is featured on the cover of the Novemer issue of Diabetes. Advancing Immunoengineering and Encapsulation Technologies

Alice Tomei, Ph.D., director of the DRI's Islet Immunoengineering Lab, has developed an innovative encapsulation technique, known as confrmal coating, for protecting islet cells.
