DRI Scientific Director Dr. Camillo Ricordi was the featured guest speaker of a video chat presented by TuDiabetes.org, an online community of people touched by diabetes. Dr. Ricordi spoke about the technology and biology involved with creating a mini organ to mimic the native pancreas and the DRI projects and global collaborations underway to make it a reality.
During the segment, Dr. Ricordi gave an update on islet transplantation and referred to the animated video below that illustrates the isolation and transplant procedure. He is well known for inventing the machine, knows as the Ricordi Chamber, that makes islet transplantation possible by isolating large numbers of islet cells from the human pancreas. Dr. Ricordi performed the first series of clinical islet transplants that reversed diabetes after implantation of donor purified islets into the liver of recipients with diabetes.
