Love and Hope Preview Party

Underwritten for the tenth consecutive year by Isabel May, the magnificent Love and Hope Preview Party kicked off the 39th season of fundraising for the fabulous ladies of Love and Hope. This hands-on, hardworking committee, led by Life Chairman Sonja Zuckerman and Executive Chairman Sandra Levy, raised nearly $400,000 for the cure-focused work of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the Diplomat Country Club on November 17.

Nearly 200 members of the Love and Hope family reunited during the cocktail reception among bronzed hues of autumn. As they entered the ballroom, guests were reminded that in South Florida it’s always summer! Bright, oversized flowers adorned white lattice, while twinkling lights and models bejeweled by Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour sparkled. Magenta and orange glass sculptures holding roses of the same bold shades and crystal candelabras towered above each ornately decorated table.

DRI’s Dr. Norma Sue Kenyon, whose 20-year-old daughter lives with type 1 diabetes, thanked everyone in attendance saying, “We’ve made tremendous progress, and a lot of it is because of the people in this room. But we still have a way to go to reach a true cure…a biological cure.”

Zuckerman responded, “We know you will find that cure, and we will all have a victory ball when that happens!”

Levy, along with DRI Foundation President and CEO Robert A. Pearlman, then presented Cycle of Discovery awards to generous donors who have reached new giving levels. Among them was DRI Scientific Director Camillo Ricordi, M.D., who, as Levy said, “not only works tirelessly to find a cure, but has also generously donated more than $1 million.”

Also VIPs, the individuals who will be honored at the Love and Hope Ball on February 2, were recognized, including: Honorary Chairman Shirley Harris; Love Honoree Betty Madigan Brandt; Hope Honorees Robin and Jordan Weitz; Gold Stars Beatrice and Dr. Sanford Ziff; and Silver Stars Sandy and Senator Paul Steinberg.

Along with the aforementioned honorees, top contributors at the Preview Party were: Lillian Redlich; Roberta and Harvey Chaplin; Sandra and Sid Levy; Paul Johnson and Mary Sarko of Tweed Foundation; Linda Widrich Weitz; Joe Lubeck and Sid Levy of Landmark and LATA; Drs. Carol Nudelman Blumberg and Morton Blumberg; Marilyn Fellman; Lynn Girsh; Janie and Ronald Kupferman; Flois and David Landau; Jacci and Dr. Floyd Seskin; Beverlee Shere; Lenore Toby-Simmons; Barry Smith; Jill Viner; Sheila Wohl; Sandra Smith; Kathryn Chesler; Fran and Mel Harris; Kelley Kronenberg; and Barbara and Shelly Singer.

After dancing to the tunes of Debbie Taylor and Standing Ovation, guests departed with lovely gifts from Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour. Flois and David Landau, winners of the door prize, also walked away with a certificate for a two-night stay at the Diplomat Resort, including a spa or golf package!

Tickets for the 39th Annual Love and Hope Ball are $600 per person. To be placed on the invitation list or for more information, call the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation at 800-321-3437 or email
