DRI's Dr. Norma S. Kenyon Honored as a Healthcare Hero

(May, 2010) - In the diabetes community, the DRI’s Norma Sue Kenyon, Ph.D., has always been a hero.  And in May of this year, she was given the title in an official capacity at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s annual event, the Healthcare Heroes Awards.

Winning the Bio-Medical Award, Dr. Kenyon was recognized for her research in transplant immunology, specifically using biological replacement therapies for patients with type 1 diabetes.

While accepting the award, she thanked the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation for helping to “seed the research and provide the funding to get things started.  In the end, it’s all about translating all the wonderful discoveries at the Institute in Miami to the bedside of the patient.”

The Healthcare Heroes Awards recognize individuals, institutions and programs, who, through their individual or collective actions have made an extraordinary impact in the South Florida healthcare community beyond the scope of their jobs.  Dr. Kenyon joins a handful of esteemed colleagues who have received the award previously, including the DRI’s scientific director, Camillo Ricordi, M.D.

Dr. Kenyon is the director of the Executive Research Council at the Diabetes Research Institute, the Martin Kleiman professor of surgery, microbiology and immunology, and biomedical engineering at the University of Miami, and director of the Wallace H. Coulter Center for Translational Research.

Dr. Norma Kenyon said that “it takes a village” to achieve greatness in healthcare.
