Kudos for Julie...and for the DRI!

Hi everyone. We hope your week is going well.

Before we get into news from DRI, we just wanted to congratulate Julie on the upcoming publication of her book, “A Cure for Emma.”  Well done and best of luck!  We know it will be a great help to many other parents who have a child with diabetes.

Today, the DRI received the Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes from the American College of Physicians at their national meeting in San Diego. The award was established in 2008 in honor of the late Dr. Samuel Eichold II, whose lifelong passion was diabetes. The DRI was recognized for making important health care innovations for those with diabetes.

We also received word that our recent work with adult stem cells was accepted for publication in the journal, Cell Transplantation. The research, led by Dr. Luca Inverardi, showed for the first time that adult cells taken from umbilical cord blood can be transformed or “differentiated” into insulin-producing cells using methods originally designed for embryonic stem cells.

The resulting cells were able to secrete insulin in response to glucose in the study models and circulating human C-peptide could be readily detected. The method was determined to be safe in terms of tumor formation, a problem seen in research studies when using embryonic stem cells. This is an exciting first step towards the clinical use of this plentiful source of stem cells for the treatment of diabetes.
