Antonello Pileggi, M.D., Ph.D.

Antonello Pileggi, M.D., Ph.D. is a Research Professor at the Division of Cellular Transplantation of the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery (primary appointment), and at the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology, and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Miami.  Since 2003, he is the Director of Preclinical Cell Processing and Translational Models Program at the Cell Transplant Center of the Diabetes Research Institute.

 Dr. Pileggi received his M.D. degree and subsequently earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pavia Medical School in Italy. He is a versatile physician-scientist and academician with more than fifteen years of experience in multi-disciplinary basic, translational and clinical research.

 Focusing on diabetes and restoring beta cell function in insulin-requiring diabetes mellitus, Dr. Pileggi’s primary interests include transplant immunobiology, autoimmunity, immunotherapy, cytoprotection, cell biology, regenerative medicine, stem cells, and tissue engineering. He is a strong advocate of collaborative research- bridging multiple scientific disciplines to foster the synergy and acceleration of patient-focused biomedical research.  His research has been funded through the National Institute of Health, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, the University of Miami, as well as industry.

Since 2002, Dr. Pileggi mentored and tutored research and clinical post-doctoral associates/fellows, graduate and undergraduate students (including NIH Step-Up and Bridge-to-Future Programs).  He has been part of the Thesis & Dissertation Committees for the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Molecular Pharmacology at the University of Miami, and tutor for Thesis & Dissertation of the General Surgery Residency Program of the University of Pavia in Italy.  He has lectured at national and international institutions and professional meetings.

Dr. Pileggi is member of the University of Miami’s Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (ESCRO) and Scientific Award Committee (SAC).  He served as ad hoc Reviewer for the National Institute of Health, USA; the Italian Republic’s Ministry of Health; Diabetes UK; the Biomedical Research Council & National Medical Research Council, Singapore; amongst other national and international agencies.  He also contributes in the peer-review of articles for several scientific journals.

 Dr. Pileggi has authored over a dozen scientific book chapters and over 120 peer-reviewed publications in the field of organ and cellular transplantation, immunobiology and regenerative medicine (including New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Nature Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, FASEB Journal, Diabetes, Diabetologia, American Journal of Transplantation, Cell Transplantation, Transplantation, amongst others).  He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Expert Reviews in Transplantation, Lead Guest Editor of the annual Special Issue on beta-cell replacement therapies of the Journal of Transplantation, transplantation section editor of Current Diabetes Reports, editorial board member of the Review of Diabetic Studies, amongst others.  Membership to professional organizations include American Diabetes Association; American Society of Transplant Surgeons; Association for Academic Surgery (currently serving a term in the IT Committee); Cell Transplantation Society; Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies; International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association; International Xenotransplantation Association; Italian Scientists and Scholars of North America Foundation; Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society; and The Transplantation Society
