J.A. ("Jay") Happ, pitcher for the Houston Astros


Why he's involved
His sister, Heather, has type 1 diabetes.


How he helps
When he won the 2009 Players Choice National League Outstanding Rookie award -- selected by the Major League Players Association --  Happ donated the $20,000 prize to the Diabetes Research Institute.


Why the DRI?
"I have a sister who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in her mid-20s," he said. "My family and I are hoping to see a cure in her lifetime, and I know the Diabetes Research Institute is completely cure-focused."
